There are two areas or sectors in the retina: the central retina and the peripheral retina. The central retina has a small central depression (1mm x 1.5mm) called Macula and is formed in its entirety by highly differentiated cellular elements called cones; these are the ones that allow the discriminatory vision and colors. The Macula allows us to read, write and see the details of the objects. Any disease that affects this sector is called Maculopathy.
